Cadbury to the Rescue

Volunteers from Wessex 4x4 completed some vital training at the region's premier hotel in preparation to help out the emergency services.

Taking place at DoubleTree by Hilton, Bristol South, Cadbury House in Congresbury, North Somerset, 15 members of the charity Wessex 4x4 Response were able to make use of the venue's highly rated conference facilities as they undertook training to ensure a coherent and consistent approach to incident management

One of approximately thirty similar teams around the country, Wessex 4x4 Response started as Somerset 4x4 Response in 2002. With over 100 members the charity has the declared aim of providing vehicles and experienced drivers to support the Emergency Services in the area covered by Avon and Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire Police forces.

As the risk of flooding and extreme weather increases, the units are becoming more common to provide support in remote locations or uneven terrain where the emergency and voluntary services often find themselves without the correct resources.

Sasha Holloway, sales and marketing manager at Doubletree said:

"We were delighted to host the Wessex 4x4 Response group but thankfully they were only here to train and were not needed to help out with any emergency.

"Because of our location and space the Doubletree by Hilton is probably the only venue in the region that could host such a training exercise and we look forward to welcoming the unit back again in the future."

Providing valuable support in all weathers and at all times of the day and night, groups like Wessex 4x4 Response are becoming an increasingly familiar and welcome sight across the country.

Best known for providing support during the previous two winters the majority of tasks ensured that critical staff were able to get to work not only for the ambulance service but also hospitals, district nurses and home care for the elderly.

The team was also heavily involved in the Gloucestershire floods of 2007 where they and their colleagues transported over 150,000 litres of water during a ten day period.

Support has also been given to the organ transport service and stranded ambulances and in some cases providing transport to paramedics.

Wessex 4x4 Response which is one of the larger teams in the UK now has a membership in excess of 100, all of whom undergo Police vetting.
