Enthusiasts from all over the country will be gathering for four days of triple word scores starting on Good Friday at the popular West Country venue.
Cadbury House General Manager Colin Badcock said it was the first time the hotel had been asked to run the prestigious 2012 Easter Scrabble Weekend, which will feature 29 games attracting the pick of the nation’s top rated players.
He said: “We will be pushing the boat out this weekend as the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) represents hundreds of fans from all over the country.
“The organisers got in touch with us when their previous venue fell through and we are determined to make the most of our chance to make this one of the highspots on the Scrabble world’s calendar. Cadbury House is an ideal venue for groups of this size and we are determined guests enjoy a few nights on the tiles with us.”
Formed in 1987, the ABSP is a not-for-profit association which holds tournaments all over the country to promote the nation’s third favourite board game.
Organiser Ronnie Reid said Cadbury House ticked all the boxes as latest venue for the popular national tour.
He said: “Cadbury House is ideally situated to host this year’s Cadbury Cup and Bristol Easter Championship as it’s as convenient for Scrabble fans coming up from the South West or down from the Midlands.
“The setting is inspiring and I am sure contestants will be taking advantage of all the hotel’s facilities as they relax before going head to head with the nation’s best players.”
The Cadbury Cup consists of eight ABSP-rated games played over Good Friday and Easter Saturday morning with three divisions decided in strict ratings order, using the latest available ABSP ratings.
The Bristol Easter Championship is an ABSP-rated event over 21 games starting on Saturday afternoon and finishing at tea-time on Easter Monday. There will be trophies and cash prizes for the top three places in each division, plus ratings and spot prizes.
Ronnie Reid concluded: “With between 40 and 70 contestants playing one another and strict rules regarding the acceptability of words played we’ll be using a specially written computer programme to work out who has won what.”
